Children are not the same in grammatical development. We may observe that children do not learn how to speak clearly in short period of time. Instead, the process of grammar development is slow and continuous over a year. Stages of grammatical development can be helpful in observing and evaluating the development status of the students. As educator this can guide us and give information about how we can clearly help the grammatical development of the students.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting? Explain.

    Approaches to Bilingual Education

Transitional Bilingual Education- when the students are initially taught in their native language but gradually shifted over to English. This approach allows the students to ease into the English language without forcing them to convert immediately.

Paired Bilingual Education- used both languages throughout the day. The students will learn all subjects in their native language and in English at different times during the day until they become proficient in English and no longer need to be taught in their native language.

Two-way bilingual education- when all the students, are taught in both languages, pushing all the students to become proficient in a second language.

Approaches to Bilingual Education helpful and effective in the Filipino setting

In my opinion the two-way bilingual education is helpful and effective approach in the Filipino setting. Because of pushing students to expand their knowledge and skills in communicating using second languages, the students are challenged to be more competitive in the class and in the community. By this they are able to practice and build more self-confidence every time they use it as means of communication in school setting. Every time the students communicate using the second language there is always something new for them to learn. Practicing two-way bilingual education in Filipino class room will develop our student to be more competitive in global standard.

  2. 1.Children produce accurate grammatical constructions from an early age but not the same grammatical development.through these continuous development over a year application and analysis of the stages can be use and help to evaluate the grammatical development of the students.

2.Two-way bilingual Education are also known as "dual language" or "dual immersion" education programs. It consists of teaching English Language Learners in both English and their native language at different times of the day. This part of the two-way program is the same as the paired bilingual method. The difference between the two is that in the two-way program, English proficient students are also taught in English and in a second language throughout the day.
Paired and Two-way bilingual Education are very similar. They both comprise of alternate teaching between ELLs' native language and in English at different times of the day from the beginning of their education. The difference is that two-way programs also teach a second language to native English speaker.
Transitional Bilingual Education is an educational theory that states that children can most easily acquire fluency in a second language by first acquiring fluency in their native language. Fluency is defined as linguistic fluency (e.g. speaking) as well as literacy (e.g. reading and writing).

The goal of transitional bilingual education is to help transition a student into an English-only classroom as quickly as possible.
Two way bilinggual education is more effective approach in the filipino setting they can easily understand the instructions and follow the instruction using these approach ,they can communicate to others and more globally competitive ..

    Answers:

    1. States of grammatical development includes the following, first is the one word stage/holophrastic stage, two word stage and the telegraphic stage. These stages help the teachers to anticipate certain difficulties of learners with regards to their grammar. It is very important to understand and know what learners are actually learning. Social interactions could also help students enhance in their grammatical development.
    2. Bilingual education is a form of education in which information is presented to the students in two or more language. Bilingual approaches include the following: Immersion approach, this is the approach in which students hear and speak the second language exclusively in the classroom. The bilingual approach or the dual language approach is the approach to second language in which students are instructed for academic subject areas in their native language while simultaneously being taught to speak and write in 2nd language. The multicultural approach refers to any form of education or teaching that incorporates the histories, texts, values, beliefs, and perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds.

For me, I think the most helpful and effective approach in the Filipino setting is the combination of Dual Language and Multicultural approach because through this, students who are non-English speaking or students who are not yet proficient in speaking in the 2nd language will be given equal opportunities to succeed or complete the education. Moreover, because multicultural approach, for instance, educator may incorporate lessons to reflect cultural diversity of student in a particular class. Any student has the potential to benefit on both approaches. It is also a way to prepare them in a globally competitive world.

  4. 1. Please comment on the Stages of Grammatical Development and how such stages can be helpful to you as a teacher.

As carried out by the theories and experiment of Brown, Cruttenden, and Berko, child’s grammatical development starts from a single word expression to complex and easily, and intellectually understandable sentences. This grammatical development usually noticed during the early childhood which starts at the age of 1 to 5 years of age.
Knowing these stages in a child’s development helps us teachers to merely, and easily understand what a student is telling. By these, student-teacher communication can be easily achieved, and learning process for children will not be stressful, because without good interaction/communication, the learning process will be hard for both the learner and teacher. By learning these stages in grammatical development will help teachers, especially on those who are teaching pre-school children.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.

Bilingual education would be helpful and effective to those who are in the minority groups in the Philippines. Most of the student coming from the minority section of the community usually hard to understand or learn English language and even the Filipino language due to that they are not familiar with it so much, and they are usually on the remote areas in where they are hard to reach. Due to that, they are not exposed to other languages, except to their own mother language. Children coming from minority groups who are studying other language are having hard time to excel; they are having low self-esteem, and sometimes become unsuccessful because they cannot understand well the lesson. By having bilingual education students can easily understand lessons step by step by translating words that are hard to define, teachers could explain to them it easily by using their native language, and then gradually adapting other language such as English and Filipino.

Answer: Children can produce an accurate grammatical constructions in an early age through copying them from adult speech. By knowing these stages, we can easily learn how to interact to our students and we can also plan strategically regarding their lessons.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.
Answer: By using the Immersion Approach, the students will be able to become completely functional in using both foreign and first language while mastering the subject areas being taught.

    1. Stages of Grammatical Development of a child, as children do not learn how to speak properly overnight. Instead, the process of grammar development is slow and continuous. While no two children are the same, there is a general grammar progression that parents can expect their children to follow. As children move through the stages of grammar development they become more and more adept at speaking in proper English.
Stage 1 – Children generally begin speaking in recognizable words between 9 months and 1 year old. At this stage, children speak in single words. The words that children learn within this age span are predominantly nouns.
Stage 2 – Between 1 and 2 years of age, children develop the ability to speak in two-word sentences. These sentences are often not grammatically correct, sometimes consisting of two nouns and other times a noun and a verb. Most commonly, the sentences begin with a verb and end with a noun. “want milk” for example is a common stage 2 sentence.
Stage 3 – Spans from 2 years to 2 ½ years. During this time, children develop the ability to speak in three- word sentences. These sentences are often formed in grammatically correct order. Children also begin to engage in basic pronoun usage during this stage, using the pronoun I as a self-referent quite frequently.
Stage 4 – Children develop the ability to speak in simple sentences between the ages 2 ½ and 3 years old. These simple sentences include proper syntax and usually consist of three to four words.
Stage 5 – Between the ages of 3 years and 3 ½ years, children begin to integrate compound and complex sentences into their vocal line-up. At this stage in grammar development,90 percent of what a child says is clearly intelligible, reports the Children’s Development Institute.
Stage 6 – Children engage in stage 6 of grammar development betweem the ages 3 ½ and 4 ½ years.During this stage, children improbe their ability to navigate irregular verbs and properly use plural noun formations.
Stage 7 – Beyong the age of 4 ½ years, children continue to increase the complexity of their sentence formations. Modifiers, including adjectives and adverbs, become increasingly prevalent during this development stage. As children progress to school age they learn the structures of formal grammar and modify their grammar as necessary to make up for any grammatical deficiencies.
As a teacher it is important to know this stages as to be able to understand the physical and emotional development of a child during lecture sessions. To know the limitations and strength of the child to cope with the lesson.

    2. In the Filipino Setting it is advisable to use Two-Way Bilingual Education, it is a program feature instruction in both languages it is because we use Filipino and English as a common Language. Some Bilingual education programs emphasize using the student’s native language competence to help the student learn English as quickly as possible. Two way bilingual education programs because they are remedial in nature and because students who participate in such programs tend to be perceived as inferior in some respect. These educators favor what generally known as it is using 2 languages to all students.

Stages of Grammatical Development are step by step process on how children adapt in speaking. No two children are the same and it is the Stages of Grammatical Development that parents can use on what to expect from their children’s development.

As a teacher, I can use these stages as guide in assessing my students if their language capability is appropriate to their age. Also, I can use it to decide on what approach will I use so I can effectively communicate to them.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.

The different Bilingual Education approaches vary based on the individual needs focusing on his or her current language abilities, background, and cultural experiences.

For me, Immersion Approach is the helpful and effective approach in the Filipino setting among others. Immersion is the approach in which students hear and speak the second language almost exclusively in the classroom. It is because language learning occurs when there is interaction with the environment. Furthermore, the environment should be compatible with the student's own way of learning.

Different formats for immersion education are as follows:

Complete immersion is when 100% of the class time is spent in the foreign language. The goals of complete immersion include becoming completely functional in both the foreign language and the first language while mastering the subject areas being taught (e.g. math or science).

Partial immersion is when approximately 50% of the class time is spent learning subject matter in the foreign language. The goals are to become functionally proficient in the second language, to master subject content taught in the foreign languages, and to acquire an understanding of and appreciation for other cultures, but to a lesser extent than complete immersion programs.

Content-based foreign languages is when about 15-50% of the class time is spent in the foreign language. Time is spent learning the language and subject matter in the foreign language. The emphasis in these programs, which are typically seen in elementary schools, is on acquiring listening, speaking, and writing skills.

And finally, foreign language experience is when around 1-5% of the class time is spent in the foreign language. The emphasis in these programs is on cultural awareness, listening skills, and developing an interest in foreign languages.

  8. 1. Please comment on the stages of Grammatical Development and how such stages can be helpful to you as a teacher?

Answer: The grammatical development of a child is a gradual and continuous process. It cannot be learned in one day, its a gradual process. As a child grow and enter a new stage in life, the grammatical development also is also growing and developing. No two children are the same in development. Some children learn how to speak with the influence of their parents and environment and some learn through themselves or self acquisition. Some children can speak in early age, and some children learn to speak in their late childhood. The grammatical development of the child may depends on their biological aspects and their environment.

As a teacher, the stages is helpful because i can be able to recognize the individual differences of a child. I can be able to assess their learning skills and capabilities and use a teachnique and strategy to be able to deal with the chidren.

2.Which of the Approaches of Biligual Education do you think is helpful and effective in Filipino setting.Explain.

For me, the most effective and helpful in Filipino setting is the two way bilingual. It is effective to always to use our native language to be able to express and communicate with others and it is also effective and helpful to use a foreign language where an individual can develop more of their knowledge and skills. Using this approach, an individual will be able to enhance their languages and be more competetive their community and languages.
This approach is also helpful in our education setting because it serve as the main languages in instruction, using the native language will enhance humanity and in depth understanding of our education and culture. The foreign language will serve as means to understand others and preparing the students to be globally competitive.

  9. 1. Please comment on the Stages of Grammatical Development and how such stages can be helpful to you as a teacher.

The Grammatical Development of a child is a step by step and continuous process. It cannot be learned in a day and cannot be perfected in a week. it takes a long process for a child to fully develop his/her grammatical skills. Therefore it is important that they may be assisted and guided by the people surrounding them. And us, being their teachers, we are in perfect position to help them in their grammatical development. It will be very helpful for us teachers to understand these stages as it will help us assess and recognize what our students are trying to convey or communicate. As we well know, communication is one of the cornerstones of the teaching-learning process. Also, understanding these stages will also help us teachers, determine what approach to employ in teaching the lesson that will fit the varied languange skills as well as difficulties of our students.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.

In my opininion, two-way bilingual approach will work best in the Filipino setting. In this approach, students will benefit from the opportunity to develop and learn new language therefore, widening their opportunity to be competitive at the same time perfecting their skills in their native language. The two-way bilingual environment also enchances students' self-esteem because students who are native speakers will no longer be afraid of speaking and making mistakes as they can also express their thoughts in their native language.

the stages of grammatical development of children is a long process of learning. it is not achieved overnight and it needs long and practically guided time to learn. it may be taught at school or may be hone at home people around the child may actually be an influence in developing the language ability and speaking thoroughly. teachers may be in assistance through aiding them in activities that would lead into the full potential of the learner. ambiance and the surroundings may also be a factor in helping the child to learn more.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.

Bilingualism is effective because teachers can express their thoughts about the lesson. they can easily convey the information's through the use of their mother tongue (native language) that would help learners to fully understand each lesson. it may also help the students to be more active in class recitation without the fear of not having to answer in the language used (ESL) it will create a harmonious effect in the classroom setting where any one can express their thoughts and opinions without barriers that keeps the learning from taking place.

  11. Q. Please comment on the stages of grammatical development and how such stages can be helpful to you as a teacher.
    A. Everyone of us experience different kinds of development and grammatical/ linguistic is one of the development that has a big impact in our lives. Children has a big difference to us adults not just in grammatical development but also in other aspects of human development. Grammatical development can't be acquired in one night it should be a step by step process where in you will start from the basic. Different grammatical stages has its own features that we should understand, for example a kindergarten child will not be able to understand and to read properly a whole sentences without making mistakes. We teachers should understand that children has it's own characteristics and unique personality, if we are knowledgeable about different stages of grammatical and even other development we can fully understand our students behavior and actions in class. We should not think that all our students are capable of reading and understanding everything that we give to them. We should always consider that children may suffer some developmental problems, that's why teacher should know all the stages of human development to cope up and especially to fully understand our students.

    Q. Which of the approaches to bilingual education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.
    A. Two-way bilingual approach, for me this is the most effective in our country. Why? Because we want to be fluent to our native language and to English Language. Some of our subjects are still use our native subject especially on the elementary level. I think we can fully acquire proficiency in our second language if we become more proficient in our own language. Two-way bilingualism will help us to acquire both language with the same level of proficiency.

  12. 1. Around age one; children begin to produce their first words. These, of course, often do not sound much like adult words, but they bear some phonetic resemblance to them and, more important, they are sounds consistently produced in association with a particular meaning. Stages of grammatical development are very helpful for us teachers because through this we can clearly understand student’s words representing objects and actions.
    2. Using the Immersion Approach, the best bilingual education programs include all of these characteristics: ESL instruction, sheltered subject matter teaching, and instruction in the first language. Non-English-speaking children initially receive core instruction in the primary language along with ESL instruction. As children grow more proficient in English, they learn subjects using more contextualized language (for example in math and science) in sheltered classes taught in english, and eventually in mainstream classes. In this way, the sheltered classes function as a bridge between instruction in the first language and in the mainstream. In advanced levels, the only subjects done in the first language are those demanding the most abstract use of language.

  13. 1. Please comment on the Stages of Grammatical Development and how such stages can be helpful to you as a teacher.

There are six (6) stages of grammatical development that can be divided into four (4) major elements. The first stage is Sounds, which falls under the element phonology which means the sounds the words form; it also includes crying, babbling and the like. The second to sixth stages which are holophrases, telegraphic utterances, short sentences, complex sentences and adult like structures respectively can be classified under the elements of syntax and semantics. These elements and stages refer to the child’s development in terms of the acquisition of vocabulary words as well as the usage of sentences and giving meaning to these sentences. A child may at a certain stage have a limited vocabulary but will be able to understand more advance form of sentences as well as their meanings. The last element which is pragmatics can later on be developed as the child understands other forms in which language and words can be used.
As a teacher, understanding these stages in grammatical development will help me understand students and be aware if there are signs of disability and disorder that has to be given attention. It may be true that some children may be advanced than others but as there is an average age for the stages of grammatical development in which it is expected that children should be able to have such many words in their vocabulary or use such words in two sentence structures or complex sentences any deviation from this may mean that there might be a problem and it can be addressed immediately. It would also tell me what to expect of my students as they come to school and what lessons would be appropriate to assist them in their language development.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.
Bilingual classrooms do more than just preserve national identity by the
propagation of Filipino. Bilingual classrooms also result in numerous benefits on the part of the bilingual Filipino learner. Thus, Filipino educators and educational researchers should endeavor to work towards making bilingual learning systematic and effective. For me, the most applicable for Filipino or in the Philippine school setting is the Maintenance Bilingual Education, in this approach, the student will receive instructions in their native language while learning English as a second language, given there is no set time limit in which the student can be in the program. As a Filipino, it is very important for us to become skilled at our own language and be fluent with it in English as well, in that way we can be more competent. Maintenance bilingual builds native language literacy and extends it a second language as well. Therefore student will be confident to both languages. Having this kind of bilingual approach, children widen their academic competence and learn effectively.

Between 15 and 30 months, children are expected to have MLUm's (mean length of utterance measured in morphemes) of about 1.75 morphemes. Their MLUm’s gradually increase as they acquire more language. In Stage I, just after they have built up a 50 to 60 word vocabulary, children acquire the ability to produce the Stage I sentence types, outlined below. The column headed 'intent' (short for 'communicative intent') includes examples of what the child might have said if they were mature enough to talk in full sentences. As children's MLUm increases their capacity to learn and use grammatical structures of greater complexity increases. They move from Stage I into Stage II, where they learn to use "-ing" endings on verbs, "in", "on", and "-s" plurals. They then proceed to Stages III and IV. In this case, teachers will understand how and when they will teach the proper words that the child will learn.

    2. Which of the Approaches to Bilingual Education do you think is helpful and effective in the Filipino setting. Explain.

The use of English and Filipino as media of instruction in the Philippine Educational System has been met with controversy.History, has witnessed that the use of vernacular or mothertongue was not really encouraged. Although bilingualism wasintroduced in 1974, this only worked with the Filipino speaking regions. Since Philippines is an archipelago composed of multi–ethnic, multi-lingual groups, the students are not only exposed to two languages but to several languages, including their mother tongue. Therefore, any change in the curriculum greatly impacts on the learning of the students. Today, the use of both languages in the basic education contributes to making the Filipino youth grow in an educational environment that is full of contradiction and confusion.
