    1. Describe the three theories of Language Development: Learning Theory, Noam Chomsky and Interactionist Theory.

    Theories of Language Development

    The Learning Perspective

The Learning perspective argues that children imitate what they see and hear, and that children learn from punishment and reinforcement.(Shaffer, Wood & Willoughby,2002).
The main theorist associated with the learning perspective is B.F. Skinner. Skinner argued that adults shape the speech of children by reinforcing the babbling of infants that sound most like words. (Skinner,1957,as cited in Shaffer,et.al,2002).

    The Nativist Perspective

The nativist perspective argues that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge. The main theorist associated with this perspective is Noam Chomsky.
Chomsky proposed that all humans have a language acquisition device (LAD). The LAD contains knowledge of grammatical rules common to all languages (Shaffer,et.al,2002).The LAD also allows children to understand the rules of whatever language they are listening to. Chomsky also developed the concepts of transformational grammar, surface structure, and deep structure.
Transformational grammar is grammar that transforms a sentence. Surface structures are words that are actually written. Deep structure is the underlying message or meaning of a sentence. (Matlin,2005).

    Interactionist Theory

Interactionists argue that language development is both biological and social. Interactionists argue that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others.
The Interactionists argue that "children are born with a powerful brain that matures slowly and predisposes them to acquire new understandings that they are motivated to share with others" ( Bates,1993;Tomasello,1995, as cited in shaffer,et al.,2002,p.362).
The main theorist associated with interactionist theory is Lev Vygotsky. Interactionists focus on Vygotsky's model of collaborative learning ( Shaffer,et al.,2002). Collaborative learning is the idea that conversations with older people can help children both cognitively and linguistically ( Shaffer,et.al,2002).

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting? Explain.

The Learning Perspective Theory is applicable to Filipino setting. Children are born tabula rasa. They learn from what they see and hear. People and environment that surrounds them are the first source of their knowledge. In the Philippines where culture and close family tie had big impact in molding the siblings, the parents become the model for their children. What they see and hear from their home and surroundings become their guide in learning.

  2. 1 . Learning theories
are conceptual frameworks describing how information is absorbed, processed, and retained during learning. Cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences, as well as prior experience, all play a part in how understanding, or a world view, is acquired or changed, and knowledge and skills retained.
    2.Interactionist Theory

Interactionists argue that language development is both biological and social. Interactionists argue that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others.

The Interactionists argue that "children are born with a powerful brain that matures slowly and predisposes them to acquire new understandings that they are motivated to share with others"
The nativist perspective argues that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge. The main theorist associated with this perspective is Noam 3.Chomsky.

Chomsky proposed that all humans have a language acqusition device (LAD). The LAD contains knowledge of grammatical rules common to all languages (Shaffer,et.al,2002).The LAD also allows children to understand the rules of whatever language they are listening to.Chomsky also developed the concepts of transformational grammar, surface structure, and deep structure.

    2. The learning theory is more applicable in the Filipino setting once a is child born they can easily learn what they hear and see especially to the sorroundings or environment and to the people surrounds them.

A.LEARNING PERSPECTIVE/ SOCIAL LEARNING- argues that children imitate what they see and hear, and that children from punishment and reinforcement.(Shafller,Wood and Willoughby,2002)The main theorist associated with the learning perspective is B>F Skinner. Skinner argued that adults shape the speech of children by reinforcing the babbling of infants that sound most like words. (Skinner, 1957, as cited in Shaffer, et.al, 2002).
B.NATIVIST PERSPECTIVE – argues that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge. The main theorist associated with this perspective is Noam Chomsky. Chomsky proposed that all humans have a language acquisition device (LAD). The LAD contains knowledge of grammatical rules common to all languages (Shaffer, et.al.2002).The LAD also allows children to understand the rules of whatever language they are listening to Chomsky also developed the concepts of transformational grammar, surface structure and deep structure. Transformational grammar is grammar that transforms a sentence. Surface structures are words that are actually written. Deep Structure is the underlying message or meaning of a sentence.(Matlin,2005).
C.INTERACTIONIST THEORY- argues that language development is both biological and social. Interactionists argue that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others. The Interactionists argue that “Children are born with a powerful brain that matures slowly and predisposes them to acquire new understandings that they are motivated to share with others” (Bates,1993;Tomasello,1995, as cited in Shaffer, et al. 2002,p.362).The main theorist associated with interactionist theory is Lev Vygotsky. Interactionists focus on Vygotsky’s model of collaborative learning is the idea that conversations with older people can help children both cognitively and linguistically (Shaffer,et.al.2002)

    2. Interactionists theory, for, me is the best suited for Filipino setting. Because in this theory the children need to interact with others, they need to speak and be spoken. In some research, it is said that the brain is most flexible and is connected to a critical period for learning language easily. This critical period makes it easiest to acquire language before age eight or nine when ability begins to sheet down. A child’s environment is the most critical component to language development. An environment free of abuse and excess stress, frees the brain to create the necessary language connection. In such environment adults need to provide a language-rich nurturing world in which attentive care givers encourage child’s effort.

  4. 1. Describe the three theories of Language Development: Learning Theory, Noam Chomsky and Interactionist Theory.

    LEARNING THEORY / LEARNING PERSPECTIVE
The Learning perspective indicates that children imitate what they perceive through sight, hearing, and that children learn from punishment and reinforcement.

    NATIVIST / NOAM CHOMSKY
The nativist perspective implies that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge.

    INTERACTIONIST THEORY
Interactionists argue that language development is both biological and social. Interactionists argue that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others. The Interactionists argue that children are born with a powerful brain that matures slowly and predisposes them to acquire new understandings that they are motivated to share with others

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting. Explain.
I think all could be applied to the Philippines due to that the Filipinos are intelligent and curious in nature, that what they perceive on the environment they react on it, and learn from every circumstance. We could learn languages by just having observing it, sometimes mimicking, and through interactions. But what most applicable is the interactionist, because mostly of the parents and guardians do interactions with their children, playing games, letting their child talk to other child, and sometimes they learn their own because sometimes children especially babies have their own connections and understanding with each other.

  5. 1. Describe the three theories of Language Development: Learning Theory, Noam Chomsky and Interactionist Theory.

Answer: On the Learning Perspective Theory, it represents that children imitate what they see and hear, and that children learn from punishment and reinforcement. While the theory of Noam Chomsky which is the Nativist Theory, it argues that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge. Chomsky also proposed that every human has a language acquisition device (LAD) that allows children to understand the rules of whatever language they are listening to. On Vygotsky's Interactionist theory, he argued that language development is both biological and social. He also added that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others.

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting. Explain.

Answer: I think the theory that can be the most applicable here in country is the Interactionist theory. Because we have this natural tendency to always share our knowledge and experiences to others. By this theory, we can't just help our children to gain knowledge efficiently but we can also help them to be a social human being and be more socially aware of their surroundings.

  6. 1. Learning theories are conceptual frameworks describing how information is absorbed, processed, and retained during learning. Cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences, as well as prior experience, all play a part in how understanding, or a world view, is acquired or changed, and knowledge and skills retained.
Noam Chomsky believes that children are born with an inherited ability to learn any human language. He claims that certain linguistic structures which children use so accurately must be already imprinted on the child’s mind. Chomsky believes that every child has a ‘language acquisition device’ or LAD which encodes the major principles of a language and its grammatical structures into the child’s brain. Children have then only to learn new vocabulary and apply the syntactic structures from the LAD to form sentences. Chomsky points out that a child could not possibly learn a language through imitation alone because the language spoken around them is highly irregular – adult’s speech is often broken up and even sometimes ungrammatical.Chomsky’s theory applies to all languages as they all contain nouns, verbs, consonants and vowels and children appear to be ‘hard-wired’ to acquire the grammar. Every language is extremely complex, often with subtle distinctions which even native speakers are unaware of. However, all children, regardless of their intellectual ability, become fluent in their native language within five or six years.
Interactionist theory is less tangible than say, role theory, because it involves internal mental models as opposed to external social models. Meaning-making occurs when the individual associates objects and actions with meaning for themselves. Consequently this type of theory appears more tentative and even negotiable. Symbolic interactionism proposes that prior to engaging in an interaction, human beings size up the other party to determine the value of the interaction in symbolic ways. For example, what is the value of being a woman if you consider yourself a woman living in a man's world? What value does the student role possess when you can't understand a thing your professor is saying?

    2. For me Learning Theory because it is more realistic to the Filipino setting. As we learn to speak and write we ought to do it for ourselves that is close to interaction but we cannot do our own without learning. Every action takes place to our surrounding we learn, as we learn we grow. As a Filipino to our culture we are learning if we feel and touch the essence of it by doing something that close to our hearts.

    1. 1. Learning theory or the cognitive theory is proposed by Jean Piaget where it explains that humans learn through punishment and reinforcement. This theory describes how we perceive and how our information is being absorbed, processed and retained during our learning.
The Nativist or Innatist theory is proposed by Noam Chomsky where biological aspect plays an important role and has influenced our language development. In this theory all humans have the Language Acquisition Device or (LAD). The LAD contains knowledge and allows children to understand the rules of languages they are listening to.
The Interactionist Theory is proposed by Lev Vygotsky where it explains how biology and social contexts have influenced our language development. It also explains that language is acquired from an interaction of human innate capabilities to acquire knowledge in environment which the child is developing.

      2. Answer: For me the Interactionist Theory is applicable in Filipino setting. It is innate for us to acquire and learn language because we have our brain that has a role in our language development. The environment and our social contexts support us to enhance our innate capabilities to learn and develop our languages. In our setting, i believed that our language is a product of our social interactions most especially with the important persons in our lives like our parents and school.

    Learning Theory (Learning Perspective)

The Learning Theory argues that children imitate what they see and hear, and that children learn from punishment and reinforcement. B.F. Skinner is the main theorist associated in this theory. He argued that adults shape the speech of children by reinforcing the babbling of infants that sound most like words.

    Noam Chomsky (The Nativist Perspective)

The nativist perspective argues that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge. The main theorist associated with this perspective is Noam Chomsky. He proposed that all humans have a language acquisition device (LAD). The LAD contains knowledge of grammatical rules common to all languages. The LAD also allows children to understand the rules of whatever language they are listening to.

    Interactionist Theory

Interactionists argue that language development is both biological and social. They also argue that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others. Furthermore, they argue that "children are born with a powerful brain that matures slowly and predisposes them to acquire new understandings that they are motivated to share with others."

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting? Explain.

Among the three theories, for me Noam Chomsky’s The Nativist Perspective is applicable in the Filipino setting. We are one country yet have different languages mainly because we’re grouped by islands. Language Acquisition Device (LAD) allows children and adult to understand the rules of whatever language they are listening to. This leads Filipino to speak fluently on their native language at the same time learning new language when they go to other places.

  8. 1. Describe the three theories of Language Development: Learning Theory, Noam Chomsky and Interactionist Theory.

Learning Theory - emphasizes that language can be learned through reward and punishment (Skinner) and that languange learning takes place primarily by observation and imitation (Bandura)

Nativist Theory - Noam Chomsky, the main proponent of this theory, argued that languange is the product of an unlearned, biologically-based, internal mental structure -- the Learning Acquisition Device (LAD) which makes learning easier

Interactionist Theory - (Vygotsky) Tend to view that children have a strong biological predisposition to acquire knowledge. It also stresses the importance of both the social support that parents provide the young languange learners, as well as the social contexts in which a language learning child is instructed.

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting. Explain.

I believe that the Interactionist Theory applies best in the Filipino setting. it is very apparent that the environment in which a child interacts plays a vital role in the languange development of a child. I believe that a child who grows in a nurturing environment develops better not only linguistically but hollistically as well, than that of those who do not have a social support from their parents and their environment.

  9. 1. Describe the three theories of Language Development: Learning Theory, Noam Chomsky and Interactionist Theory.

Learning Theory -Behaviorists believe language is something that can be observed and measured. The need to use language is stimulated and language is uttered in response to stimuli. To the behaviorist, competence in the rules of language is not as important as the ability to speak it; speaking is what makes language real. Knowledge is a mental state and the structure of a language doesn’t make it a language; it is the function of speaking words that makes a language a language.

Nativist Linguistic Theories -The manner in which a child acquires language is a matter long debated by linguists and child psychologists alike. The father of most nativist theories of language acquisition is Noam Chomsky, who brought greater attention to the innate capacity of children for learning language, which had widely been considered a purely cultural phenomenon based on imitation.

Interactionist theory -This theory is an approach to language acquisition that stresses the environment and the context in which the language is being learned. It focuses on the pragmatics of language rather than grammar, which should come later. In this approach, the beginning speaker and the experienced speaker--be they child and adult or second-language learner and fluent speaker--exist in a negotiated arrangement where feedback is always possible. The basic appeal of this approach is the importance it places on the home and the cultural environment in early-childhood language acquisition. Language, according to this theory, is not an innate ability. Rather, it develops in negotiating your environment. Hence, vocabulary is bound by context or, alternatively, by the culture within which speech is necessary and understandable.

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting. Explain.

as a child I've learned to speak by mimicking words. so for me the interactionist theory best describes how Filipinos learned their way of speaking the environment typically plays a vital part. interaction with people around you supports the learning process it give an idea on what to learn and how to learn things and hone it to the ability to speak well.

    Q. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting. Explain.
    A. For me , Interactionist Theory is more applicable in our country. Why? Because we are not just learning through our home but also from our environment. I believe that we first learn by the help of our parents but as we grow old our learning increases because of the people that surrounds us, not only our family but also our friends, teachers and other persons that we encounter as we grow old.

    2. Which of the three theories do you think is applicable in the Filipino setting. Explain.
For me, I think Vygotsky's interactionist theory is the most applicable in our setting. As Filipinos, and as social beings, we have the need to interact. The country is an archipelago composed of diverse dialects entirely different from another. This theory has the strongest argument and is deemed true and correct. I believe that communicating with others is the major factor in child’s language development. This theory will help not only the parents but also the teachers to build a globally competitive yet patriotic and nationalistic society by communicating with a child using the universal language (English) and their mother tongue, which based on the theory; the children will adopt and learn.

The most applicable theory for me is the Interactionist because all humans have the capacity to learn language without anyone teaching them and also the kind of people a person or a child is interacting may affect the language they would learn.
